Los Angeles Chargers fans are super excited as wide receiver Keenan Allen, aka “Slayer,” returns to the team on a one-year deal. At the age of 33, the six-time Pro Bowler is back, and the Chargers are confident that they are getting a Lombardi trophy this season.

Allen’s precise route-running, strong hands, and ability to always get open have long made him a fan favorite NFL player, but it’s his nickname, “Slayer,” that adds an extra layer of swagger to his game, a name with a story as bold as the man himself.

Where did “Slayer” Come From?

Allen’s confidence and skill make “Slayer” a fitting moniker, as he shared in a Chargers interview, recalling memorable moments.

“Somebody came up with it on Instagram and it stuck.”

He also explained in another interview, sharing that during his rookie year in 2013, a fan commented on his social media, calling him a “Slayer.”

And Allen loved it.

“I just took it and ran with it. I’m like, Yeahhhhhh, that’s a good little name. It kind of goes with my game, ’cause I be killing dudes.”

He described further

“It demonstrates me on the field just crushing DBs.  I haven’t found a DB who can guard me yet.”

That confidence is pure Keenan, and the nickname became his badge of honor. Interestingly, he even got custom grills, necklaces, and bracelets with “Slayer” blinged out, a nod to his persona.

In 2017, Allen’s Instagram account showed off his “Slayer” grill, making it official.

A Six-time Pro Bowler Began his Professional Career in 2013

Allen’s career began when the then-San Diego Chargers selected him in the 3rd round, 76th overall, in the 2013 NFL Draft, which made him the highest-drafted wide receiver from Cal since DeSean Jackson in 2008.

Over 11 seasons with the Chargers from 2013 to 2023, Allen earned six Pro Bowl selections, including five straight nods from 2017 to 2021. His 2017 season was a comeback for the ages after an ACL injury, which earned him the NFL Comeback Player of the Year and Offensive Rookie of the Year honors from the Pro Football Writers Association.

In 2023, his last year with the Chargers, he set a team record with 108 catches and 1,243 yards. Against the Vikings, he went off for 18 receptions, 215 yards, and even threw a 49-yard touchdown pass, talk about slaying! In 2024, Allen was traded to the Bears for a fourth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, despite a heel injury and early drops slowing him.

Now, back with the Chargers, “Slayer” is ready to dominate. His nickname, born from a fan’s comment and describing his strong ability to overwhelm defenses, has perfectly captured his fearless vibe. Chargers fans are excited to see him challenge opposing teams in 2025, bringing that “Slayer” energy to the field.
