The highly anticipated college football debut for six-time Super Bowl-winning coach Bill Belichick did not go exactly as planned. TCU Horned Frogs erupted for 41 straight points on the way to a 48-14 over Belichick-led Tar Heels, on Monday, Sept. 1 at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. With this loss, the Tar Heels have now lost their season opener for the first time since 2021. According to ESPN, the 48 points allowed by UNC’s defense are also the most points given by any Belichick-led team.

UNC Blown Out by Horned Frogs

UNC started strong, opening the game with a well-executed touchdown drive, but the Horned Frogs quickly took control and never looked back. TCU put the game out of reach early in the second half when Kevorian Barnes ripped off a 75-yard TD run. With a 20-7 lead at halftime, that score effectively sealed the outcome.

The season opener highlighted just how much work the Tar Heels need to do to stay competitive this year.

Since his introductory press conference in December, Belichick has emphasized fundamentals, but the UNC defense was far from sound. Tackling breakdowns, dropped passes, and even mishandled punt snaps plagued nearly every unit, resulting in a disastrous performance from start to finish.

TCU dominated the UNC across the board, including total offensive yards, outgaining the Tar Heels 542 to 222. After North Carolina’s opening drive, the Tar Heels managed just 139 yards over their next 10 possessions.

Quarterback Gio Lopez struggled to find rhythm, going over two hours of game clock without a completion. His third pass of the night came with 8:17 remaining in the third quarter. Later that quarter, Lopez left the game with an apparent injury after taking a brutal hit following a fumble, which TCU’s edge rusher Devean Deal returned 37 yards for a scoop-and-score touchdown.

Bill Belichick’s Embarrassing Loss in Celebrity-Packed Season Opener

The legendary Michael Jordan was among the celebrity-packed crowd at the UNC’s game against TCU on Monday.

Jordan was spotted attending alongside NFL legend Lawrence Taylor and former UNC basketball coach Roy Williams. Other celebrity attendees included soccer star Mia Hamm and country singer Eric Church, while Chase Rice performed a pre-game concert.

Also in attendance were Yankees manager Aaron Boone, former NFL player Julius Peppers, and Belichick’s 24-year-old girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, who was seen sitting with former NFL star Randy Moss.
